Black Flocked Hand
Adding sussexes to an existing flock(chicken)?

I have two bluebells and two other birds which I think are black rocks. I want to add at least two Sussex breed pullets to the flock, and maybe two Plymouth rocks too. Tips on introducing and adding please. P.s my current girls are not laying yet, but are close to it, and they are still new, I've had them like 4 weeks and they don't quite let me touch them, they will eat out of my hand, but not much more.

Buy the new birds in 2s at least, never buy just 1 new hen. Buy them from the same place so they have a trusty pal to go around with and not be bullied so much.

To be honest I just put my new hens in shed early afternoon and shut the door until bedtime (give them water obviously) then I open the door & the existing hens come in to inspect the new girls. This saves you having to chase around the pen in the dark getting the new hens into their new home, very stressful if they don't know where they are supposed to go to roost.

Usually all is fine, a bit of chasing around the next day but nothing dramatic. Looks worse than it is. Feed them in at least 2 places so the new hens are not competing for food. Make sure you have enough perch space in the coop that they can roost alone and not next to the existing hens.

Your hens are still young, they should tolerate any new hens just fine.
