how do i bleach natural hemp cord white without it breaking?
I have found an awesome and easy solution to bleaching brown hemp white so i can make lacey jewelry patterns, but i have noticed that bleaching too long destroys the durable integrity of the cord itself... has anybody tried this and created a successful all white hemp?
You don't say what you were using, but you would not use chlorine bleach on hemp. Yes, chlorine will destroy the fibres, and your cords will break. You can sometimes use a bleach made with peroxide on hemp, but you need to be careful with that.
The age-old method that still works well is to leave your hemp out in the sun. Dampening in the morning dew is what was used, and the the sun will lighten it until it is as white as it can get. Try that. Be sure to turn it over every day so that the other side bleaches as well. You will find it won't take very long to get white.
