Claddagh Rings | Traditional Irish Gifts
Claddagh rings first appeared during the 17th century during the reign of Queen Mary II. The renowned goldsmith called Richard Joyes, who resided in the small fishing village of Claddagh, originally crafted the unique design that eventually became part of the Irish heritage. These traditional Irish rings are very popular, particularly amongst those of Irish descent, and have been given as gifts of friendship, love, loyalty and fidelity for many years - "let love and friendship reign" is the ring's well fitting motto. The Claddagh ring is easily recognised by its striking and unmistakeable design of two hands clasping a heart, surmounted by a crown - the heart is said to symbolise love, the hands are said to symbolise friendship and the crown is thought to symbolise loyalty.
How to wear Claddagh Rings
The Claddagh ring can be worn in several ways to indicate the wearer's availability. If the ring is worn on the right hand with the crown turned inward, it suggests that the wearer is available and has not yet found true love. If the ring is worn on the same hand with the crown turned outward, then it suggests that the wearer is perhaps in a relationship but not yet married. If, on the other hand, the ring is worn on the left hand with the crown turned outward, it informs any potential suitors that the wearer's heart is well and truly spoken for.
Claddagh Rings in Silver and Gold
Claddagh rings come in silver, gold and even platinum. You can choose between birthstone rings, signet rings, emerald rings, family crest rings and wedding bands - all using the traditional Claddagh Rings design. You can purchase rings to suit men and women, which make perfect gifts for Valentine's day, Saint Patrick's day, birthdays, engagements, weddings, anniversaries and any other special occasion that involves love and friendship - short messages can also be etched inside the band of the ring to display the name of the wearer or the date of a wedding, etc. Whoever receives one of these unique and beautiful rings as a gift, is sure to wear it with pride and treasure it for the rest of their lives.
You don't have to be Irish or even Celtic to wear a Claddagh, but if you want to express true love for someone you will be hard pressed to find a piece of jewelry more suitable. On a well made ring you can see the fine detail on the crown that sits above the heart, and even down to the details on the fingers the nails can be seen. The ring which was initially made in the Claddagh region of Ireland is now also made in the USA and other countries in Europe. The rings all carry the hallmarks of Gold and Silver and it is suggested that you have your ring sized by a jeweler before ordering.
