parakeet owners, do u know?
NOT to put parakeets in circular cages;that, it eventually causes them brain damage? To trim their toes CAREFULLY avoiding the "quick" inside their nails...and, to leave a little margin shy of the quick? Also, to keep a cuttle-fish bone in their cage so their beak does not become "hooked"? I LOVE parakeets and am so often dismayed to see that so many of them are not given this BASIC care!
I have never heard about the round cage problem. I would like to know where you heard or read this. I have a larger, vintage, tall and round cage and I have my two small green cheek conure parrots in it. It is in a corner of the room. They are funny little tweaks anyway, but I doubt it is due to the cage shape. They are doing very well........... Trimming their toe nails is often easier by using perch liners with corundum, similar to sand paper, (available at any good pet shop and yes, they (do) help), using natural and heat sterilized branches, Cement covered perches, or just using a small Pedi-paw grinder. This can be difficult on a smaller bird and can be a bit frightening at first. I would suggest having a bird shop dealer do this for you till you learn how to do it safely. The good shops will offer this service at a small fee, mine does, (even though I can do this for myself, even on my red-factor canaries.) I would not cut the nails on such a small bird, if it can be avoided by other means. If having to do this yourself, you need to leave more than just a shy margin away from this quick. They can start to groom the nails back to being sharp and can bite too close, then causing bleeding themselves. Most smart birds will groom their own nails. I still recommend grinding over cutting........A cuttle bone is a nice addition to the toys you offer, but may I suggest you also provide a calcium and mineral block. This provides the same beak trimming effects as well as giving them the essential minerals and some good vitamins they need. Most birds love the things!!!! They will make short work of it. They also make bird pumace-like stone toys that are good too, just harder to find. Buy good quality toys that give them something to chew on. If your bird has an overgrown beak, the bird shops will also include the grinding and polishing in the trimming services they provide. It is a common practice that should only be done by experts. The birds are so small and I do not recommend doing this yourself. The beaks are full of nerves and blood vessels and can easily be split or damaged by the stress of nippers and cutters. I get a lot of inquiries from worried bird owners that have made this mistake! It is kind of costly to have the beaks cauterized by a vet and then you may get quite the reprimand from him as well. Each bird owner has their own favorite things they do for their little friends. No one particular process is the same for others. You only need to read a few manuals, talk to shop owners and choose the easiest and safest way to do it for yourself. I always enjoy a good visit with my friends at my favorite bird shop. I can do the grooming on my own, but like the company of other bird brains like myself. I hope this little tidbit of info can help you. Enjoy your little budgie buddies!!!!!...>{8>}:
