Where is the best place to find beads for hemp necklaces?
I'm not talking about the glass pieces that go in the center, just regular beads that I can put through out the necklace. I found some at michaels that the hemp will fit in, just not that much. Is there a better place I can find beads with bigger holes?
Are there any other craft stores in your area? They might carry some beads.
Are there any bead shops? If you don't know of any, you can ask people you know if they know of any.
Try your local dollar stores. I was surprised at the selection they had. It wasn't amazing, but was way better than I anticipated and it helped me save a hell of a lot money. Don't only look for beads - also look for necklaces you could take apart for the beads.
If you're not uptight about thrift stores, sometimes they can have amazing deals on beads. I once bought several unopened packs of wooden beads with neat designs on them for only like 2 dollars, and I got close to a thousand awesome beads!
Another time, I found a pack with a bunch of beads for only 3 dollars that I knew for a fact was worth at least 30.
Another time I got 3 full rolls of hemp - 400 feet each. One was plain, one red and the other blue. Only cost 3 dollars!
Like I said earlier, also look at the necklaces. I've found some of my best beads and pendants at local thrift stores from taking apart old necklaces and washing the beads.
If you know of any weed/hemp related stores in your area, try them. There's one in my area and they sell a variety of very well priced beads, and some neat glass pendants as well as the best variety of hemp twine around!
If you've got a local walmart, try it. The selection at my walmart isn't very big, however they do have some very nice sets of beads at very affordable prices.
If you don't mind putting some effort in it, another great idea is to make your own beads out of clay. They're easy to make and the posibilities are endless. All you need to do is design it, stick a toothpick through it and stick it in the oven. And, if you want, you can put some sort of glaze over it. Some people even paint on them and then put a finish to protect it.
You can make clay beads any shape you want, any colour, mix colours, make awesome designs. I've made licorice/twizzler beads, and I love swirling colours together. I've also bought glow in the dark clay to make some beads and pendants.
If you want a neat idea for pendants (even though you didn't ask ;D), may I suggest guitar picks?
It's easy. Just poke a hole in the top of it with a needle/wall-tack/something of the sort. Depending on the plastic and how this it is, it might be a better idea to heat the needle with a candle/the oven first and then use it to melt a hole through it. Some people might also use drills or something. Then you just buy metal rings and stick it in. Some people might even drill holes in it.
You can buy neat guitar picks with designs or bands, and they look pretty cool. If your a musician it can make an awesome necklace.
I make and sell hemp jewelry as a hobby, and my current best sellers are my guitar pick necklaces. The Beatles guitar picks are my top sellers.
Having made countless hemp necklaces, I always keep an eye open for potential materials. I've bough and taken apart random items, like a couple belts and even a purse, just for the beads. I visit michaels (unfortunately, it's the only legit craft store where I live) and thrift stores every couple of days.
I've never tried or done it yet, but I once got a tip to look at hardware stores to buy materials.
If you go to Michaels, make sure to try to bring a coupon with you. They have weekly coupons - usually you can get 40% or 50% off of one item per person per day. If you go with a couple of people, you can save a ton. You can usually get their coupons on their website when you click to view their weekly flyer. You can also get some coupons if you sign up on their website.
From my experiences, you can print out the same coupon several times and use it with no problem as long as it's not expired. I usually print out the same coupon a couple times and go with a couple of friends, and get them to pay for whatever item I want/need (I give them cash before they go to pay and they give me the change).
