How Do I Collect Skeletons Of Dead Animals Inexpensively?
I'm a 17 year old male, I wear a lot of gothic clothing, so naturally when I found a belt buckle with A REAL scorpion in it, I bought it right away. I am now wearing it, but now I am craving more dead animals.
I'm thinking about starting a western theme with the skulls of gazelles & Elk mounted on my bedroom wall. I NEED more dead animals, but where the Hell can I find some cheap ones? I realize that I've been growing an unhealthy obsession with dead animals, but I certainly don't wanna be no hippy, so whatever!
I also need to know if there are bug necklaces, or snake skin boots. Anything that was made through animal remains. I might need some suggestions on how to make a really creepy display of my collection, Thanx!
Well, I don't know what your working with, or how much work your willing to put into this...
You should be aware that this kind of hobby will be viewed negatively by many people, just keep that in mind...
One way is to find taxidermists in your area-they usually have quite a few skulls and bones around. Depending on their temperament and yours, they are usually willing to sell them cheaply or give them away to people who show an interest in their craft. Spending some time with them and cultivating a friendship can really pay off. I've gotten all kinds of skulls and bones this way, some really awesome ones.
Another way is DIY. But if you don't have the space or privacy this is impractical, and it really is only for smaller animals...
The best way to do it yourself -
You'll need old animal cages, potting soil, (or just lose dirt) and an area -back yard, field, etc.that's kind of private where your set up won't be bothered or bother anyone.
Finding dead animals is usually fairly easy, look especially near roadways. you want a body that hasn't met with too much trauma or you'll just end up with lots of smashed up bones. Place the dead animal in the cage and bury the cage in the ground, so just the top is showing, make certain the inside is completely filled with dirt. Now just wait. The insects and worms will clean the meat off for you. Larger scavengers will dig up and destroy/scatter the bones if you don't use the cage. In a few months you just dig it back up. I would recommend having a sieve or something to help sift the dirt and separate the bones. You can boil larger bones to clean them, but this will make them soft and smaller bones will break apart from to much heat. You can whiten them with bleach, but this too can damage smaller bones.Peroxide can also be used for whitening, and is gentler then bleach.
You can also use the bacteria method, but this Is really smelly so if you don't have a workspace separate from your living space it won't work for you. All you need here is a water tight container with a lid. The lid does not need to be, nor should it be, airtight, Fill this with warm water and let the body just soak in it, changing the water (this water is great for gardens) regularly as it gets "rotty" and greasy. Bacteria will eat away the meat and soon the bones will be ready to clean. Just slide the remaining meat off the bones with your hands-wear gloves unless your into slim. Don't use this method if your squeamish-it smells and cleaning the last of the meat off the bones is a little gross.
If your willing to set up a more permanent arrangement and have the space using tubs or aquarium indoors filled with dirt and dermestid beetles is the very quickest and best method. This is the method used by museums and many taxidermists to safely clean bones for mounting without damaging them. You can order the beetles online pretty cheaply.
You can also "mummify" smaller animals using salt. This does not give you a skeleton, but a preserved body. Take a small dead animal and skin it-everything looks creepy without it's skin- and gut it. Now you just have the meat and bones. You'll need a container-like a bucket or large tupperware-fill this with salt and place the animal in it. Make sure it's covered completely with the salt. Try to make sure the body is in a anatomical position you want-like don't just shove it in there, arrange it so it's in a position that you'll want later. Leave it for a few weeks, when you dig it back out of the salt it will be dried and preserved, and hard as a rock. It will also Look Bloody Wicked!
